Phelps - 3 Races, 3 World Records, 3 Gold Medals

In his first three events Michael Phelps has taken the gold and tied Carl Lewis, Mark Spitz and two others for the most career Olympic gold medals in Olympic history.
Since the swimming finals were held in the morning in Beijing, NBC has shown the races live in the US.  We watched on the edge of our seats while he won the 400 individual medley for his first gold in Beijing.  We were as emotional as he was - he was too choked up to sing the national anthem on the medal stand. He has come a long way in this journey -- from a broken wrist last year to the gold.

Like us, Phelps couldn't believe his teammate Jason Lezak's closing burst to take them to the gold for  the 400 freestyle relay -  gold #2 for Phelps. He was jubilant!

With his latest gold, in the 200 freestyle, Phelps was all business. With a fast start, Phelps left his competition behind for a spectacular finish.

Although he is not expected to take seven gold medals in these Olympic games, who knows what will happen.   I know I'll be watching to see what he'll do next.

On the eve of the opening ceremony of the Olympics, President Bush arrived in Beijing.

In a speech in Thailand, President Bush strongly criticized China’s human rights record, stating that the Chinese people are entitled to freedom and America opposes the treatment of political dissidents, religious activists and human rights advocates.

According to reports, the President will address these concerns with Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Just recently, U.S. speed skating champion, Joey Cheek, had his visa revoked by China – just hours before he was to leave for Beijing.  Apparently, Cheek was intending to demonstrate his concerns regarding China’s support of the Sudanese government.
